New Capital Campaign:

People Assisting Animal Control (PAAC) is proud to announce that Dr. Melissa Draper, one of the region’s most respected and experienced veterinarians, has joined the organization part-time tosupport its high-volume clinic and expanding community programs.

This exciting addition comes at a pivotal time for PAAC, as the organization has finalized plans for a new facility on recently purchased land on Bear Lane. To bring this much-needed project to life, PAAC is launching a capital campaign to raise $6 million to build a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic and community outreach center that will serve all of South Texas.

“We are incredibly excited about this next chapter,” said Cheryl Martinez, President of PAAC. “Our goal is to break ground this year, but we need the community’s support to get there. Every donation, large or small, will help us provide greater access to care for pets in underserved areas and continue our mission of reducing shelter intake and improving lives.”

Bringing additional veterinarians on board is a critical step in expanding PAAC’s capacity. Dr. Draper’s arrival strengthens the team at a crucial moment. With a career spanning over two decades, she brings a wealth of expertise, including her service as Chief Veterinarian for the City of Corpus Christi from 2012 to 2025, and Chief Veterinarian for San Antonio Animal Care Services from 2007 to 2011.

“Dr. Draper has been a leader in animal welfare across Texas,” said Martinez. “Her experience and dedication will be key as we grow our impact and continue breaking down barriers to care for pets and the people who love them.”

With community support, PAAC hopes to begin construction soon and ensure that every pet, regardless of their owner’s income, has access to the care they need to live a healthy life.

A letter from PAAC’s President:

Thank you for choosing us to care for your pet. It’s a privilege to be part of their journey to a healthy, happy life. We understand that pets are family, and we are honored to support you in giving them the care they deserve.

We’re excited to share a bit of news about how we’re growing to meet the needs of pets in our community. We’ve recently acquired land on Bear Lane, near the new Food Bank, where we will be building a larger facility. With an additional 6,000 square feet, our new space will allow us to provide care for even more pets—adding capacity for 50 additional pets each day, or 13,000 more each year. Our hope is that this expansion will allow us to keep pets in loving homes and ease the burden on local shelters.

Over the past year, we’ve worked hard to increase our capacity by 15%, and we’ve also expanded into the Rio Grande Valley, making us the largest spay/neuter clinic in South Texas. These changes mean that more pets across our region can receive the compassionate care they need.

Your trust in us is the foundation of everything we do. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your pet’s life and for letting us share in the joy they bring. We’re committed to being here for you and your pets, providing the best possible care and working to ensure that every pet owner in our community has access to the services they need.

Thank you for being a part of our community and our journey.

For the Animals,
Cheryl Martinez
